What is the current phase of your life? Are you confused about the question? Is it because you never gave it a thought or is it due to your confusion about your life? Let us try to understand it.
There are three phases in our lives: Being, doing and having. All these phases are cyclical and follow each other. Success of “doing” phase is based on the success of “being” phase. Similarly, success of “having” phase is based on how well we performed in “doing” phase. Did you say you did not understand what that means? Let us dive a bit deeper.
Being
“Being” is the first phase of our lives. “Being” means just to be the way we are. It is an opportunity to understand ourselves and to know what we really are as human beings. If we want to know about ourselves, we need to answer few basic questions. How do we behave with our family and friends? How do we react to challenges in our lives? Are we in total harmony with our lives? Do we enjoy being the way we are? Are we happy with our true selves or do we need any improvement in our lives? Reflecting on these questions will provide us insight to plan for future and to sow the seeds of future. If we want to see changes in our present, we will have to plan in the same direction.
Doing
“Doing” is the second phase of our lives. “Doing” means making efforts to achieve the goals about which we planned in the “being” phase. When we are clear about the changes we want to make in our lives, the next step is to stay focused and do the needful to achieve our goals. Our actions should be in coordination with our goals. When we do something, we need to pause and think if our action will take us a step closer to our goals. If not, it is better to step back and take the right course. Doing right things at the right time makes the journey of lives easier.
Having
“Having” is the final phase of our lives. In this phase, we can reap the fruits of efforts done by us in “being” and “doing” phases. In fact, “having” is directly proportional to our consolidated efforts in “being” and “doing” phases. If we planned well in our “being” phase and acted according to our plans in our “doing” phase, then our “having” phase will be a happy phase.
Examples
- Let’s take an example of an overweight person, weighing 125 kg and having a sedentary lifestyle. Many diseases, such as diabetes, hypertension, heart disease and joint pains, have already made their way into his body. His doctor advised him to lose his weight, or he might lose his life. Now, it is a “do or die” situation for him. In his case, “being” phase is not perfect. He knows that he cannot remain the way he is, so he plans for losing weight. His goal is to bring down his weight to 75 kg in 1 year, but he does not know how to achieve the big goal. Before jumping to the “doing” phase, he contacts a dietician to discuss his problems. The dietician suggests him to make some changes to his diet and lifestyle. Moreover, he also needs to work out daily. He is on the right path now, but he knows that there is a long way to go before he reaches “having” phase. However, if he remains consistent in his efforts, he will reach his goal and will lead a healthy life thereafter.
- Now, let us take the example of a secondary school student who is unsure about his career path. In his “being” phase, he sometimes thinks about choosing engineering career, and at other times, he gets attracted to a career in the medical field. During this phase, he should try to visualize his life for the next 40 years. You read it right! Generally, people choose a career for approximately 40 years, which means almost half of their lifetime. For making a choice for a lifetime career, isn’t it important to spend some time in introspection? This introspection will help him to choose the career that will be apt for him and will remain relevant till his retirement. After making a choice about his career, “doing” phase will involve joining the relevant coaching institute, staying focussed and working hard till he gets admission to the desired course. Even after getting admission to the desired course, there will still be more years of hard work to complete the course and to find a job. Sometimes, he will feel that “doing” phase is getting too long. At that stage, he will need to keep himself motivated. After all this hard work, he will finally get the sweet fruit of “having” phase.
If we always go in same sequence for these phases, there will always be a happy “having” phase in the end.
As we have understood the three phases of life, are you able to realize the current phase of your life? If not, then try to think about it.
